Klosterkyrkan
is a 14-century church of brick, and has been part of a monastery. One of Lund's two medieval churches. May 15, 2011: Klosterkyrkan, or St. Peter's Monestary Church, is in addition to the Cathedral, the only remaining medieval church in Lund. Built of red brick in the 1300s as the church of a monestary. Of the monastery is nothing left except the church. Nor is there remaining any of the medieval interior. Despite my many years in Lund I have not been inside the church. Bikes down to Västertull where the church is located. The gate stands open and welcomes me. There will soon start an Estonian worship. The parish seems to be dying out, it consists of a few older women and one almost as old priest. I light a candle in the light bearer. In the floor at the entrance lies a worn tombstone. Think we should protect these stones from being weared even more as everyone walk on them. The altarpiece is from the 15th century but is purchased 1931. In the center is Mary flanked by two bishops. In two niches is Peter standing. The service starts and I go out for a walk in the cemetery. In the east are some gravestones from 17th and 18th centuries. A stone is in the church wall. A large urn. A large stone. The former Archbishop Olof Sundby was buried here. The church has a low tower, where Lund's oldest church bell from the 13th century is. Chestnut tree is in bloom. The service comes to the end when I go in again. The pulpit, with sculptures depicting the four evangelists, is from the 17th century. In the floor are two tombstones, one Danish Nelissen and one Swedish Jönsson. In the west, below the organ, is a baptistery. In a window burn a candle. The candle I lighted has finished. Concludes my visit. At the entrance is a sandstone with ornaments, a remnant of the church that preceded the current one. It has started raining. Bicycles past Bantorget to Ebba's skafferi on Bytaregatan, take a cappuccino. Bikes for home. In a plane tree sit a jackdaw and huddle in the rain.
